The City of Riverside has a sewer collection system consisting of over 800 miles of sewer lines, 16,000 manholes, and 19 pump stations throughout the City. Collections Division staff perform a variety of maintenance operations to ensure the proper function of the entire system. The City's comprehensive maintenance program includes Hydro-jetting sewer lines, removing roots, performing video inspections, and other forms of preventative maintenance.
In 2009, The City of Riverside implemented a Sewer System Management Plan (SSMP) which outlines how the City properly manages, operates, and maintains all parts of the City's sewer system. The SSMP has been prepared in compliance with the current requirements of the State Water Resources Control Board adopted Order No. 2022-0103-DWQ, Statewide General Waste Discharge Requirements (WDRs) for Sanitary Sewer Systems. The City periodically reviews the SSMP to ensure compliance with the WDRs and evaluate its effectiveness. As a result of the SSMP’s implementation, spills within the City have declined.
On May 6th, 2025, the latest version of the City of Riverside's SSMP was adopted by the City Council, as documented in Signed Resolution (PDF).
