Environmental Compliance Plan Check

Plan check is an important part of building construction and alteration. Having your plans checked by Environmental Compliance ensures that all pretreatment equipment is in compliance with Chapter 14.12 of the City of Riverside Municipal Code.

Connect to sanitary line:

The following should connect to the sanitary line:

  1. Soda machines.
  2. Condensate Lines (from coolers and freezers)
  3. Ice machines.
  4. Plumbing associated with the bar area (for serving drinks)
  5. All bathroom Fixtures (toilets, sinks, etc.)
  6. All Drains (associated with bathrooms)

Connect to grease waste line and/or interceptor:

The following should connect to thegrease waste line and/or grease interceptor:

  1. Dishwasher.
  2. Garbage Grinder.
  3. All Sinks (including hand sinks, floor sinks and kitchen sinks)
  4. Trench Drains (in trash enclosures and drive-thru areas)

Note: Exceptions to the above requirements may apply on a case-by-case basis..

Grease Waste Line & Interceptor Requirements:

The grease waste line should connect to a grease interceptor (if required) before flowing into the sanitary line.
Domestic wastewater, restroom waste, and personal care facility waste must not pass through the grease waste line, interceptor, or sample box.
All Grease interceptors shall be properly vented AFTER the sample box.

Submitting Revised Plumbing Plans:

If you are required to submit revised plumbing plans to Environmental Compliance, please follow these steps:

  1. Submit three sets of plumbing plans showing corrections.
  2. Provide one set specifically marked as Industrial Waste for review.
  3. Submit the plans to:
    • Permit Techs
    • Building and Safety

Plans must be reviewed and approved by the Environmental Compliance Section (Industrial Waste) before any construction, modifications, or tenant improvements that may affect plumbing or wastewater discharge.

Inspection Requirements:

  • Prior to backfilling, the Environmental Compliance Section (Industrial Waste) must inspect the plumbing and any devices connected to the interceptor (if required).

Note: If the interceptor and sampling station are installed without inspection, you may need to expose the work for re-inspection.

The Environmental Compliance Section inspection is separate from the plumbing inspection performed by the Building and Safety Inspector.

Grease Interceptors:

A grease interceptor must meet the following specifications:

  • Two or more chambers (excluding the sample box), each with a ring and cover, and brought to grade.
  • A discharge/effluent tee must extend to within 12 inches from the bottom of the final chamber.
  • The influent tee must extend no more than 6 inches below the operational fluid level of the interceptor.
  • A sample box must be provided at the discharge end of the interceptor.
  • All grease interceptors, sand/oil clarifiers shall be properly vented after the sample box.
  • Sanitary waste must connect downstream of the grease interceptor.
  • The minimum size for a grease interceptor is 750 gallons.
