Be Prepared & Stay Safe

Power outages can happen due to an unlimited number of reasons and may impact the whole community, so customers are always encouraged to be prepared and have a plan to stay safe and comfortable during a power outage. Here are some tips to get you started:

Be Prepared for a Power Outage

  • Identify backup charging methods for phones and keep hard copies of emergency numbers.

  • Build or restock your emergency supply kit, including food, water, flashlights, a radio, fresh batteries, first aid supplies and cash.

  • If you own a backup generator, ensure it is ready to safely operate.

  • Plan for any medical needs like medications or devices.

Stay Safe During a Power Outage

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

  • Buy ice to keep food or medicines in coolers.

  • Use food supplies that do not require refrigeration.

  • Only use backup generators outdoors and away from windows

  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

  • Use alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or power dependent medical devices.

  • Check on your neighbors.

  • Do not use your gas stove for heat.

  • Visit a community center location with power if heat or cold is extreme.
