Published: 6/10/2017

RIVERSIDE, CA – On Sunday, May 21, 2017, at 10:28 p.m., Riverside Police Officers responded to a shooting at the Shell gas station located at 3502 Adams Street in the city of Riverside. Upon arrival, they found five members of the Hells Angels outlaw motorcycle gang in the area of the Shell station fuel pumps. One of these members, 31-year-old James Duty, was shot multiple times and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. A second Hells Angels member was struck by a bullet in the helmet he was wearing but was not injured.

Detectives from the Riverside Police Department’s Robbery - Homicide Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit, and Technicians from the Forensic Unit responded to the scene and began an investigation. Surveillance video of the suspect vehicle was obtained from surrounding businesses. This vehicle is described as a silver four door sedan with black rims. It is believed to be a 2012 to 2014 Nissan Versa or Chevy Cruze. The suspect vehicle was last seen entering the west bound onramp to the 91 freeway from Adams Street after the shooting.

It appears the shooter was the front passenger of the suspect vehicle. He is described as a White or Hispanic male, 5’10” tall, and weighing approximately 200 pounds.

Detectives believe the shooting is related to an ongoing feud between the Hells Angels and Mongol motorcycle gangs which began back in the 1970’s. There have been several recent violent encounters between Hells Angels and Mongols members in Riverside and Orange Counties.

Attached is a photograph of the suspect vehicle taken from the surveillance video. If you have any information about this murder investigation, please contact Detective Jim Simons at (951) 353-7138 or Detective Jim Brandt at (951) 353-7137.
