Riverside Residents Can Properly Dispose of Old and Tattered Flags

In 2016, American Legion Post 289 donated the first Flag Depository Box to the City of Riverside. The flag of the United States of America is one of the nation’s most widely recognized symbols and represents freedom and liberty. When the flag is in such condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified and ceremonial way.  American Legion Post 289 and the City of Riverside Fire Department recognized the need for the citizens of Riverside to have a standard method of proper flag disposal. After a full year of research, modifications and graphic design to a retired oldfashioned mailbox, American Legion Post 289 presented the inaugural Flag Depository Box to Fire Station 1 located at 3401 University Ave. The box will be checked regularly to ensure all flags are cared for in an honorable manner.
