RIVERSIDE, CA – On Friday, January 20, 2023 at approximately 12:40 p.m., Riverside Police Officers responded to a reported carjacking along the 4200 block of Market Street in downtown Riverside.  A Black male adult suspect approached an adult female victim while stopped in her car, brandished a firearm, then carjacked and kidnapped her a gunpoint.  He forced her to drive away, then after circling around the area, the victim was able to escape and the suspect then drove off with the stolen car.

About 40 minutes later while officers were concluding their investigation, our City of Riverside’s Public Safety Communications Center received a call regarding a person matching the carjacking suspect’s description knocking on doors in the 5900 block of Meadowbrook Lane.  The described Black male adult was seen talking to an elderly man but then both disappeared abruptly.  Officers arrived and learned the elderly man lived alone and there should not be anyone else inside his home.  They entered the house to discover the carjacking suspect inside and the elderly man beaten, shoved inside a closet, and concealed underneath a pile of clothing.

The suspect was safely apprehended officers, and the elderly male victim was taken to a local hospital for injuries to his upper body and head.  He has since been released over the weekend.  The adult female victim of the carjacking and kidnapping did not sustain any injuries.

Detectives with the Robbery – Homicide Unit, along with Specialists from the Forensics Unit, responded and assumed the investigation.  With assistance from our Explosive & Ordinance Detection Canine “Shadow,” the weapon believed to have been used by the suspect was located inside the scene of the home invasion robbery and determined to be pellet gun resembling a Glock-style pistol.  The stolen vehicle taken during the carjacking was also found parked outside the home along the street.

42-year-old Ronald Rafeek Legardy Jr., on parole for carjacking out of San Bernardino County, was arrested and later booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for carjacking, kidnapping, home invasion robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and violation of parole.  He is currently being held without bail.

This investigation is still ongoing and there are no other details to release at this time.  Anyone with additional and relevant information should contact Detective Bryan Galbreath at (951) 353-7105 or [email protected], or Sergeant Darrell Hill at (951) 353-7107 or [email protected].
