City of Riverside “Tunnel of Hope” Honors Healthcare Workers, First Responders

Mission Inn Avenue underpass at Highway 91 lit up to thank those fighting COVID-19

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The City of Riverside has created a “Tunnel of Hope” by lighting up an underpass under Highway 91 at Mission Inn Avenue to honor healthcare workers, first responders and others who are working to protect the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tunnel, which first appeared on Tuesday night, is scheduled to be lit up with blue lights each night. The tunnel uses existing lighting fixtures already in place.

“All across the country, communities are celebrating their frontline workers who are serving in essential roles to slow the spread of COVID-19 and help those who have been stricken with the virus,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said. “I’m proud of our city for creating the Tunnel of Hope to thank workers delivering essential services during this unprecedented time.”

The tunnel is visible to motorists driving local streets in the area, but likely not from motorists on Highway 91. The Mission Inn Avenue exit is one of several entrance points to downtown Riverside from the freeway. Signs with the words “Tunnel of Hope For COVID Frontline Workers” are posted nearby.

“The blue light from the Tunnel of Hope shows our city is stepping up for the people who are stepping up for us,” Mayor Pro Tem Erin Edwards said. “If you are getting food for your family in the downtown area or picking up a prescription, be on the lookout for this beacon of hope.”
