Current Situation
On February 12, 2024, at 8:23 a.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department was dispatched to the Target located at 2755 Canyon Springs Parkway for reports of smell of gas within the business. The first arriving engine company upgraded the incident to a Hazardous Materials Incident. There were also several employees who complained of medical issues. Several employees were treated and released on scene. One employee was transported in minor condition by AMR to a local area hospital. Out of precaution, the building was evacuated. Resources that responded to the incident included the following:
- Two Chief Officers
- Three Engine Companies
- One Truck Company
- One HazMat Team
- One Safety Officer
- 4 AMR units
- Riverside County Environmental Health
The Hazardous Materials Team made entry into the structure and reported normal atmospheric conditions with no harmful gasses found in the structure. It was determined that the source of the odor was from an emergency back-up generator on site that ran propane and diesel fuel. Facilities management was on scene conducting the monthly generator check, when it malfunctioned, and the smell of propane entered the structure.
A total of 42 employees were evacuated from the structure. A total of 22 firefighters and two chief officers responded to the incident. The building was turned back over to Target Managers. The estimated retail loss is $25,000 for the duration of the store being closed during the incident.
