Stations

The triple combination Fire Engine is the primary fire engine for the City of Riverside Fire Department. The term “triple combination” refers to the apparatus having three main components; water tank, fire pump and hose. The engine company performs fire suppression duties at structure, vehicle, wild-land, and other types of fires, such as providing a water supply and advancing attack hose-lines. Additional duties include search and rescue, extrication, ventilation and Advanced Emergency Medical Care. Each engine company in the City of Riverside is staffed by a Firefighter/Paramedic. The City of Riverside staff’s thirteen fire stations with front line engine companies.

The City of Riverside Fire Department operates three tillered truck companies and one rear-mount truck company. The rear mount truck company is stationed at Station 13 with three front line tillered truck companies stationed at Station 1, Station 2 and Station 3. All four truck companies are Quint Truck Companies. The term “quint combination” refers to apparatus having five main components; water tank, fire pump, hose, aerial ladder and ground ladders.

Performs forcible entry, search and rescue, ventilation, salvage and overhaul, and utilities control, and provides access to upper levels of a structure. May also provide elevated water streams, extrication, and basic or Advanced Life Support Care (ALS). The City of Riverside Fire Department is in the process of staffing truck companies with 4 personnel with the 4th person as a Firefighter/Paramedic to provide Advance Life Support Care (ALS).

In addition, performs forcible entry, search and rescue, ventilation, salvage and overhaul, and utilities control, and provides access to upper levels of a structure. May also provide elevated water streams, extrication, and basic or Advanced Life Support Care (ALS). The City of Riverside Fire Department is in the process of staffing truck companies with 4 personnel with the 4th person as a Firefighter/Paramedic to provide Advance Life Support Care (ALS). The City of Riverside Fire Department with Measure Z funds is in the process of replacing all front line truck companies as Quint Trucks. The Quint Trucks will be stationed at Station 1, Station 2, Station 3 and Station 13.

Primary function is too respond to medical aid emergencies to provide Advanced Life Support Care and are staffed at the top three busiest fire stations to reduce the call volume off of the Engine Company to enable the Engine Company to be more readily available for fire incidents. The Squad Company also responds to structure fires and vehicle accidents where extrication may be needed.

Extinguishes ground cover or grass fires and protects structures in areas close to fields and woodlands often referred to as the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). The brush trucks are being replaced with Measure Z funds and they will be four wheel drive. The brush trucks also carry additional wildland fire hose and chainsaws.

A heavy rescue vehicle, sometimes referred to as a Rescue Company, Rescue Squad or Technical Rescue, is a type of specialized fire apparatus. They are primarily designed to carry specialized equipment for technical rescue situations such as vehicle extrication, machinery rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse rescue, and water rescue. Station 3 personnel are trained in technical rescues and are members of Urban Search and Rescue as part of California Task Force 6.

A hazardous materials company responds to and controls scenes involving spilled or leaking hazardous chemicals. These units have the specialized equipment, personal protective equipment, and training to mitigate chemical emergencies. Station 2 personnel are trained hazardous materials personnel and staff the apparatus which are Haz-Mat 2, Support 2 and Decon 12.

ATV-1 and ATV-3, Primary function is too access Mt. Rubidoux and off road trails to rescue hikers having an medical emergency. The ATV(s) is also utilized for major events in the City of Riverside such as the Festival of Lights, Car Shows and July 4th firework display on Mt. Rubidoux.

The water tender’s primary purpose is to transport large amounts of water to the fire area to make it available for extinguishing operations. These are especially useful in rural areas where fire hydrants are not readily available and natural water resources are insufficient or difficult to exploit. In particular in areas along the Santa Ana River Bottom. The water tenders are stationed at Station 4 and Station 5.

The breathing supports specializes in filling Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus cylinders on structure fires and technical rescue incidents. The breathing support can also perform rehab duties and provide on scene lighting at nighttime. The breathing support is stationed at Station 5.

During an emergency incident, the first fire officer on the scene must "establish command", which can then be transferred to more senior officers such as the chief. The chief may delegate some statutory powers to qualified officers, such as the ability to enter or use private property as reasonably necessary to stop a fire, or to order people or property seized as may be essential to preserving safety or investigating the cause of an incident.

A chief vehicle is not only a means of transport, but can act as an Incident Command Post and a contact point for media reporters. The City of Riverside Fire Department has two Battalion’s staffed by 24 hour shift Battalion Chiefs, Battalion 1 and Battalion 2.

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) manages a statewide fire and rescue program, providing apparatus on loan to local fire departments for use in their districts, while requiring those departments to staff the vehicles for the state when needed. Cal OES purchases the apparatus fully equipped, then assigns them to local governments and fire agencies on temporary use agreements where the state never relinquishes control of the vehicles The agencies agree to staff the vehicles anywhere and anytime that are needed, whether in state or across the nation.

The program has been around since 1950, when it was run under the federal Civil Defense Program. California is the only state in the country still running this program-it is the cornerstone of California's fire and rescue mutual aid system.

The City of Riverside Fire Department Fire Maintenance Facility is located at the City of Riverside Corporation Yard off of St. Lawrence and is responsible for maintaining the operational readiness of the Department's fleet of apparatus and support vehicles. Performing routine and emergency repairs, safety inspections, preventative maintenance and emergency apparatus outfitting are among a few of the countless duties that are carried out by a team of highly skilled fire mechanics.

Utility 1 is a 4X4 Ford F-250 long-bed pick-up truck with a shell. The primary purpose of Utility 1 is to serve a Strike Team Leader vehicle for City of Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief’s to utilize for mutual aid strike teams. The vehicle allows for transporting of gear and equipment to support the logistics of a strike team. The vehicle also serves for logistics for city emergency incidents and towing of ATV-1. The vehicle also serves as a reserve squad when needed.

Utility 2 is a Ford F-250 long-bed. The primary purpose of Utility 2 is to support the Haz-Mat team on hazardous material incidents. The vehicle is also utilized to transport personnel for crew rotations and logistics on emergency incidents.

The vehicle is not staffed, but cross staffed with Station 2 personnel. Is a Box Truck Ford vehicle that carries additional supplies and gear for the Haz-Mat team such as their Level A thru Level C entry suits and decontamination gear.

Is a stake-bed Ford pick-up truck with a lift gate. The main purpose of Utility 3 is to provide logistics to the technical rescue team during emergency incidents and the ability to transport large dimensional lumber or rescue gear if needed to emergency incidents. Utility 3 will either two the Water Rescue boats or HART trailer to emergency incidents. The Utility is also utilized to transport fire hose after large scale incidents typically to Station 14 to have the hose washed, rolled and returned to specific stations.

Is a Ford Hybrid Escape vehicle that is utilized by station personnel to move personnel from location to location as needed to meet the staffing needs of the organization. The vehicle is also utilized by EMS-2 a shift fire captain to work on the CAD program for dispatching.

Is a Ford vehicle that is utilized by the EMS Coordinator to respond to large scale disaster incidents, multi-patient incidents (MPI’s) and to travel to various locations for meetings along with training.

Is a Ford F-150 long bed pick-up truck with a shell. The vehicle is utilized by station personnel to move personnel from location to location as needed to meet the staffing needs of the organization. The vehicle is also utilized to transport gear and equipment for emergency incidents as needed.

Utility 8 is a 4X4 Chevrolet Tahoe. The primary purpose of Utility 8 is to serve a Strike Team Leader vehicle for City of Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief’s to utilize for mutual aid strike teams. The vehicle allows for transporting of gear and equipment to support the logistics of a strike team. The vehicle also serves as the reserve Battalion Chief vehicle for Battalion 2 along with moving personnel to meet the staffing needs of the organization. The vehicle also has served as a reserve squad as needed.

Is a Ford Hybrid Escape assigned to Station 13. The primary purpose of the vehicle is for Radio 1 a shift fire captain assigned to Station 13 to respond to the radio repeater sites on Box Springs and various places within the City of Riverside to work on the radio equipment. The vehicles also serves to transport department personnel to meet the staffing needs of the organization.

The vehicle is not staffed, but cross-staffed with Station 3 personnel. -Horse, Animal, Rescue, Team. HART is staffed by Station 3 Technical Rescue Personnel and assisted by Riverside County Animal Control along with if needed the Riverside Police Department mounted horse patrol. Station 3 personnel are trained in Large Animal Rescues. The team has participated in several large animal rescues not just limited to horses. The vehicle is a boxed trailer that is pulled by a department utility vehicle such as Utility 3.

This is an open double stack boat trailer used to transport two Zodiac F420 Inflatable Rigid Bottom (IRB) boats with 25-30 hp outboard motors. These boats help meet the needs of the Swiftwater Rescue Team during flood and river rescue incidents. It is typically towed by Utility 3 or Heavy Rescue 3.

This is an open stacked trailer designed to carry two Personal Water Craft (PWC) and a spare Zodiac F420 IRB on top. These PWC’s are utilized by the Swiftwater Rescue Team in flood and river rescues.

This is a Ford F450 4x4 crew cab pickup truck used to transport the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and rescue gear used by the Swiftwater Rescue Team during flood and river rescue incidents. It is staffed only when needed by Station 3 Swiftwater Rescue Team members. It can be deployed anywhere in the state at the request of the Governor of California.

This is an enclosed trailer that carries additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and rescue equipment for flood and river rescue incidents. It is typically towed by OES WR3 and is part of the state response to water related rescues at the request of the Governor of California.

This is an enclosed trailer that carries additional lumber and supplies used in emergency structure stabilization and below ground rescues. It is typically towed by Utility 3 or Heavy Rescue 3 and supports the efforts of the Technical Rescue Team.

The vehicles is not staffed, but cross-staffed with Engine 12. A member of the crew can staff the vehile and respond to the incident. Decontamination is defined as the process of removing or neutralizing a hazard from the environment, property, or life form. The principal objectives of this process are to prevent further harm and optimize the chance for full clinical recovery or restoration of the object exposed to the dangerous hazard. The triage process is the initial step taken to meet the primary objectives of a disaster response, which involves sorting the injured by priority and determining the best utilization of available resources (e.g., personnel, equipment, medications, ambulances, and hospital beds).

This specifically outfitted decontamination truck supports the Haz-Mat team to provide expedient mass decontamination of victims at the scene of a hazardous materials or weapons of mass destruction incident. The vehicle is supplied with materials to process 200 initial victims.

A patrol is a 4 wheel drive heavy duty pick-up truck with a slide-in pump unit. The vehicle is equipped with a 300-gallon water tank and small diameter hose on a reel for rapid deployment. It is designed to do a quick attack on a small brush fire. Brush firefighting hand tools and some basic rescue equipment are also carried.

The patrol is not staffed, the vehicle is crossed staffed with Truck 13. A member of the engine crew can staff it, if it is felt it may be needed with the Truck on a response. During emergency conditions, off-duty personnel may be called to staff it to patrol high hazard areas. The vehicle is also utilized to respond to medical emergency incidents within Sycamore Canyon. The vehicle also serves as a reserve squad when needed.

Quad 14A and Quad 14B are on loan from the City of Riverside Parks and Recreation Division. The Quads are outfitted with racks to transport EMS gear and a rider is outfitted with safety gear. The vehicles are not staffed, but cross-staffed with Engine 14 personnel who are trained to operate the Quad’s. The vehicles are designed to transport Advanced Life Support EMS gear with a paramedic into Sycamore Canyon and other remote locations in the City of Riverside to locate the patient and to begin EMS treatment and care. The paramedic would then direct in additional resources to assist.

Utility 14 is a Ford F550 that formerly served as a Rescue Squad. Utility 14 now tows Quad 14’s open flatbed trailer for emergency responses into open lands such as Sycamore Canyon, Box Springs Preserve, Alessandro Arroyo, La Sierra Hills and Santa Ana River Bottom. Utility 14 can be placed back into service as Squad if needed. Utility 14 also serves to aide emergency incidents with logistics and transporting personnel.

The Fire Life Safety Trailer is an interactive scaled down model of a residential house. The trailer serves as an instructional aide for children to learn fire safety and how to exit a house a fire.

Ladder Trailer 14 houses the Ladder Program for the department. A shift captain at Station 14 oversees the ground ladder program and conducts ladder repairs, ladder testing and ladder replacement.

Station 1 is a multi-company station staffing Engine 1, Truck 1, Squad 1 and Battalion 1. Station 1 is Battalion 1’s headquarters. Truck 1 cross staff’s ATV-1 and Brush 1. On duty Station 1 personnel include; one battalion chief, two captains, two engineers, three fighter/paramedics and two firefighters. Station 1 also facilitates the following programs:

On duty Station 2 personnel include; one battalion chief, two captains, two engineers, three firefighter/paramedics and two firefighters. Station 2 also facilitates the following programs:

Station 3 is a multi-company station staffing Engine 3 and Truck 3. Engine 3 cross staff’s Rescue 3. The remaining vehicles are cross-staffed by Station 3 personnel. On duty Station 3 personnel include; two captains, two engineers, two firefighter/paramedics and one firefighter. Station 3 also facilitates the technical rescue team and all personnel are members of the California Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 6. The station is also responsible for filling of SCBA cylinders.

Station 5 is a multi-company station staffing Engine 5 and Squad 5. Station 5 personnel cross staff’s Breathing Support 5. On duty Station 5 personnel include one captain, one engineer, one firefighter and two firefighter/paramedics. Station 5 facilitates the SCBA program.
