Public Works Engineering StaffConstruction Projects

Public Works has many ongoing projects such as road improvements and repairs, water and sewer line repairs and replacement, wheelchair ramp installation, gutter and curb maintenance, and renovation or maintenance for city buildings.  Grading, construction and other work in public areas may need permits.

Santa Ana RiverFloodplain Management

A floodplain is the area near water, such as a river, stream, creek, lake, etc. that may become flooded during or after a large storm. When a stream or lake overflows, the surrounding area is a natural storage area for the excess water. Effective floodplain management aims to both reduce flood losses and protect the natural resources and functions of floodplains. Flood insurance is a prudent first step to reduce the ever-rising costs of rebuilding.

La Sierra Freeway OverpassFreeway Interchanges

As a region grows, it may become necessary to replace existing freeway overcrossings and railroad overpasses to accommodate increased traffic flow.  Upgrades to freeway interchanges may include ramp widening, new retaining walls and landscaping.

Railroad Grade Separations

Did you Know?

Survey Crews

Survey crews determine elevations and distances, as established by historic and new benchmarks.

Grade separation projects eliminate traffic congestion issues and public safety concerns by redirecting vehicle and pedestrian traffic above or below busy railroad tracks through the use of overpasses and underpasses, literally "separating" conflicting traffic at grade crossings.  These are costly projects, but essential, to improve the flow of people and goods in the city.

Land Development

Riverside Municipal Code requires private land developments to construct certain improvements to accommodate the proposed project and minimize the negative impacts caused by the development such as traffic, increased drainage and reduced water quality.  Civil engineers in the Land Development section of Public Works are ready to assist anyone who is developing or redeveloping their property within the city.
