Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) have joined together via a master inter-utility agreement that will allow the utilities to combine their efforts to provide wide-ranging water, energy, and gas efficiency programs to their Riverside customers.
“We’re very excited about this new agreement and what it means for both our utilities,” said RPU Interim General Manager Steve Badgett. “It will give us the opportunity to provide expanded programs that can offer greater savings to a wide variety of customers.”
The utilities have separately provided their residential and commercial customers with a number of conservation and efficiency incentive programs for years. In 2012, RPU joined with SoCalGas to jointly administer the gas utility’s Energy Savings Assistance Program for income-qualified customers, and provided funding for additional electric saving measures to the program. Its success led to the exploration for additional partnerships.
“Working together, we identified several existing programs that could be combined to create better value and comprehensive savings for our shared customers,” said Gillian Wright, SoCalGas director of customer programs and assistance. “Our inter-utility agreement demonstrates how public-private partnerships can benefit the community.”
Among the programs initially targeted for the partnership is RPU’s popular and successful Small Business Direct Installation (SBDI) program, which offers assistance with things like lighting retrofits, HVAC system tune-ups, LED case lighting, and efficient motor installations. The addition of gas utility incentives, provides opportunities to reach new customer segments citywide.
