Bicyclists in the City

Cyclist needs vary depending on the skill level of the cyclist and the type of trip the cyclist is taking. Cyclists can be separated into two skill levels:

  • Casual Riders
  • Youth and adults who are intermittent riders. Some casual cyclists, such as youth under 16, may be unfamiliar with operating a vehicle on roads. Casual bicyclists generally prefer off-street bike paths or bike lanes along low volume, low speed arterials. Casual riders may have difficulty gauging traffic and may be unfamiliar with the riles of the road, they may also bike across intersections. Less direct routes may be used to avoid arterials with heavy traffic volumes. Casual riders may ride on sidewalks and travel the wrong way on streets. Casual cyclists typically travel ten miles or less per ride.

  • Experienced Riders
  • Long distance road cyclists, racers, and those who use their bicycle as a primary means of transportation. These cyclists generally feel comfortable riding on roads with high traffic. Experienced riders prefer on street bike lanes that are direct routes to off-street paths. These riders avoid riding on sidewalks and ride with the flow of traffic on streets negotiating the bike like a motor vehicle. Experienced Cyclists typically travel more than 25 miles on a recreational ride.
