Project Description

The Riverside Avenue Underpass Project will construct a railroad underpass at the Riverside Avenue/Union Pacific railroad at-grade crossing. Major elements of the project include lowering Riverside Avenue from Merrill Avenue to about 300 feet north of Elizabeth Street, constructing cul-de-sacs at Elizabeth Street and Tipperary Way, constructing a new street (Mono Drive) to connect Trinity Court to Sunnyside Drive, and constructing a two-track railroad bridge to carry train traffic. Project Construction Schedule

  • Construction Start Date: December 27, 2013
  • The project will take approximately 20 months to construct.
  • The First Phase of construction includes finishing Mono, constructing the Cul-de-sac on Tipperary, and completing the access road for the apartments on the north side of the tracks.
  • Once these Items have been completed, Riverside Avenue with be closed to traffic.

Project Facts and Benefits

  • Average traffic on Riverside Avenue is over 16,000 vehicles per day.
  • Approximately 36 trains per day cross Riverside Avenue.
  • Eliminates over one hour per day of gate down time and related delays and traffic congestion on Riverside Avenue.
  • Eliminates approximately 3 minutes average delay for each emergency responder that encounters a train.
  • Eliminates over 13.64 tons/year of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalent for 2030) due to idling vehicles delayed by passing trains.
