Current Situation
The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a report of an alarm sounding at a grocery store in 3700 block of Tyler Avenue. Originally the response dictated just a single fire company, but when the first due Company Officer determined that the alarm was for a possible Carbon Dioxide leak, he requested the department’s Hazardous Materials Team along with an additional engine company, Battalion Chief, and AMR Ambulance. The store and all of its occupants were evacuated as a precaution. The City of Riverside Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team responded. The 9 person team entered the store with sensors designed to detect Carbon Dioxide, a gas commonly used as a refrigerant. Low Levels of CO2 were discovered in the store, but they were at levels that did not pose a risk to employees of the store, or its patrons. The store was allowed to reopen, and the store manager requested refrigeration technicians to trouble shoot the system. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries during the incident.
