Mary Vanhoozer (Florence Bayz Music Series)

Multi-instrumentalist Dr. Mary Vanhoozer performs a concert of folk music and other exciting works on the Florence Bayz Music Series.

PROGRAM & BIO

A creative and versatile musician, multi-instrumentalist Dr. Mary Vanhoozer has performed recitals and chamber music concerts throughout the United States, as well as in Scotland and Switzerland. In 2018 she released her debut album for solo piano, "From Leipzig to LA," which features the complete keyboard partitas of J. S. Bach, as well as a commissioned piece, "Partita Picosa," composed by Josh Rodriguez. Mary is deeply passionate about early music: during her graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music she studied baroque performance practice with renowned lutenist and scholar Paul O'Dette, and later received voice lessons from Ellen Hargis at Case Western Reserve University. In 2021, Mary made her Los Angeles debut on hurdy gurdy joining the critically acclaimed Ciaramella Ensemble for a concert of renaissance dances. She has performed on several albums, including "Simon’s Beard" and "Under the Birchwood Tree," which feature music from John Hilton’s "Catch That Catch Can" and John Playford’s "Dancing Master." Her creative arrangements weave the tunes into conversation with one another, and offer a compelling case for including the hurdy gurdy as a welcome and more established member of 17th-century English dance and song repertoire. Mary can also be heard playing hurdy gurdy on the Grammy-nominated score for "Assassins Creed: Siege of Paris" composed by Stephanie Economou. Mary performs on a baroque hurdy gurdy by Jacques Grandchamp (2020) and a lute back hurdy gurdy by Jean-Claude Boudet (1987). She holds degrees in piano performance from Wheaton College Conservatory (B.M.), the Eastman School of Music (M.M.), and the Cleveland Institute of Music (D.M.A).
