Perchlorate is a regulated drinking water contaminant in California, with a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 6 parts per billion.
It is both a naturally occurring and man-made chemical. Most of the perchlorate manufactured in the United States is used as the primary ingredient of solid rocket propellant. Wastes from the manufacture and improper disposal of perchlorate-containing chemicals have been discovered in soil and water.
The City of Riverside Public Utilities Department has taken a proactive approach to removing perchlorate from our water supplies by blending water supplies and using cutting-edge technologies to remove perchlorate. RPU also constantly tests for perchlorate throughout each year. In 2007, perchlorate levels in Riverside’s water ranged from non-detectable to 4 parts per billion (ppb), with averages of 2 pbb, well below the state MCL.
