Sacramento, Calif. – The California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA) recently announced that Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) General Manager David H. Wright has been selected to serve as President of its Board of Directors.
Wright, who served as CMUA Board Vice President for the past two years will succeed Sacramento Municipal Utilities District General Manager/CEO John DiStasio, whose two-year term just ended. “It is a great honor to be selected by my municipal utilities peers to head this important group,” Wright said.
The CMUA was initially formed in 1932 to protect the interests of California’s consumer-owned water and electric utilities before the California Legislature. Today, the CMUA represents its members’ interests on energy and water issues before the California Legislature, the Governor’s Office and the state’s many regulatory bodies, such as the California Energy Commission, the California Air Resources Board, the Department of Water Resources, the California Independent System Operator, and the State Water Resources Control Board.
Because of the diversity and number of agencies that review rules and operations for utilities in California, Wright sees solidarity and communication being essential if CMUA members’ issues are to be heard.
“I think it is important that our member utilities are fully aware of all of the legislative and regulatory issues that are out there facing us,” Wright said, “and that we decide, as a group how to respond to them, and speak with one voice when we do.”
“By speaking with one collective voice to our elected officials and regulators the CMUA will stand out as an important body of operators with opinions that need to be considered when making utility laws and regulations in California,” Wright said.
Wright, who has served as General Manager for Riverside’s publicly-owned water and electric utilities since 2005, and been with the city since 1988, has also served on a variety of state and utilities related agencies and committees including: the California Society of Municipal Financial Officers Association, Southern California Public Power Authority, and the California Health Professions Education Foundation Board of Trustees.
