:: About City Trees

Trees beautify the landscape and enhance the quality of life for all residents. The National Arbor Day Foundation has recognized our city as a “Tree City, USA” since 1987 in honor of the care we provide for our trees.

Trees provide aesthetic, environmental, and economic values, including clean air and increased property values. The Trees & Landscaping Division is responsible for the oversight of planting, pruning, preservation and removal of trees in city right-of-ways by private contractors, volunteer organizations and citizens when working in and around trees within city jurisdiction.

These activities can be broken into three categories. These categories are Private Property, Public Property and Utility Trees.

Private Property

City Neighborhood, Riverside, CaliforniaGenerally refers to any tree not obstructing Utility Lines planted on the resident’s property.

Public Property

Generally refers to any tree planted in open spaces, in parkways (the area between a street curb and sidewalk), and right-of-ways along streets whether the trees are planted by a contract, by a city representative or by a resident.

Utility Trees

Generally refers to any tree on private property or on the city right-of-ways that are encroaching on utility power lines.
