:: Red Light Safety

On December 4, 2006 the City of Riverside launched its Red Light Photo Safety Program. The program’s principal objective is to improve traffic safety on Riverside’s streets.

Since the time of initial installation, red light violations have reduced 76% at the initial eighteen red light camera approaches. Between 2006 and 2008 traffic collisions of all types have decreased by 82% at the photo enforced intersections and have decreased by 11% citywide.

How do I pay my red light ticket?

All potential infractions are reviewed and authorized by the city's Police Department before citations are issued. Drivers who receive citations are able to review digital photos and video of the infraction in person at City Hall Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or via the Photonotice secure website within 60 days from the day the violation occurred. You will need information from your citation to view the pictures and the video.

All payments are to be made with the Riverside County Superior Court. You can pay your citation by mail, in person at any of the Riverside County Superior Court locations or online at the Epay Website. To contact the court by phone please call (951) 341-8876 or go to the
Court Locations Website
to find the nearest court location.  If you plan to contest your citations please note that all traffic court trials will be heard at the Moreno Valley Traffic Court.

“Drivers who run red lights jeopardize safety on Riverside’s streets,” said Mayor Ronald O. Loveridge. “Red light camera safety programs have significantly reduced violations and accidents in communities across America, clearly indicating their effectiveness in promoting safe driving behaviors,” he said.

Red light automated cameras and sensory devices have been installed at intersections throughout the city. Intersections were selected based on the frequency of traffic accidents and red light running. Among the intersections are:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that red light cameras used for safety have been shown effective in modifying driver behavior, in some instances reducing violation rates by as much as 40 percent during the first year of enforcement. Riverside has exceeded that with an 85% drop in violations.

The Institute also notes that driver compliance often extends to non-equipped intersections as well. In the first 6 months of 2008 the overall statistics for broadside accidents city wide is down approximately 25%, indicating the benefit of red light cameras and awareness of drivers at all intersections.
