Peace Officer Memorial Day Observance, May 21
Three U.S. Border Patrol agents who died serving Riverside County
to be added to monument during ceremony in Riverside on Monday, May 21
Riverside, Ca- Riverside County law enforcement agencies and surviving family members
will remember those peace officers who have died in the line of duty at a solemn ceremony at the
“Safe In His Arms” memorial statue, at 4102 Orange St., in Riverside, beginning at 6 p.m. The
public is invited to attend.
The ceremony, steeped in police service traditions,
recognizes those who died in service prior to 2007. Names to be added to the memorial monument this
year are of three U.S. Border Patrol agents who died in separate incidents many years apart, but
which were only recently confirmed by the multi-agency memorial committee.
U.S. Border Patrol Agent Ross Gardner died in a
traffic collision in Sedco Hills, a small community adjacent to Lake Elsinore, on October 28, 1925.
Agent Anthony Oneto was shot to death in the City of Indio on March 11, 1947; and Agent Aurelio
Valencia, assigned to Blythe, died in a traffic collision near the Riverside-Imperial County line,
on January 26, 1996.
Senior law enforcement officials taking part in the
ceremony include Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco, Riverside Police Chief Russ Leach,
Palm Springs Police Chief Gary Jeandron, Corona Police Chief Richard Gonzales, Hemet Police Chief
Richard Dana, Riverside County Assistant Sheriff Mike Andrews and U.S. Border Patrol Agent-in-Charge
Richard Salinetti.
The names of the three agents will join those of two
other USBP agents already listed on the monument, which also honors 17 fallen Riverside County
Sheriff’s deputies, 14 Riverside Police officers, nine California Highway Patrol officers, two Palm
Springs Police officers and one each from the Cathedral City Police Department, the Corona Police
Department and the California Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement (see attached complete listing).
