DUI checkpoint has positive results

Riverside, Ca- On Friday, March 16, 2007, the Riverside Police Department conducted a checkpoint for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) at the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and Garfield Avenue. Several Volunteers and Explorers from the department were on hand to assist with the effort.

Between the hours of 6 PM and 12 midnight, more than 1650 vehicles drove through the checkpoint. Although there were no subjects arrested for DUI, eighty-four (84) were cited for licensing, seatbelt and/or insurance violations and eighty (80) vehicles were impounded.

Additionally, several of the vehicles were also inspected to determine if they were illegally equipped for street racing and three vehicles were cited for having illegal modifications to their engines.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
