La Sierra High School Embezzlement
Riverside, Ca- Riverside Police detectives arrested Alina PETERSON, 36, of Riverside, this morning, January 18, 2007, for embezzling approximately $50,000 from the Associated Student Body (ASB) at the La Sierra High School campus.
The ASB is a student organization that raises funds for student clubs and extra-curricular activities.
Peterson worked as an ASB clerk for the Alvord Unified School District at la Sierra High School, since 2002. She was responsible for handling cash and checks submitted to the ASB as well as accounting control for the organization. Alvord school district officials noticed discrepancies with the ASB funds and began an internal investigation. Alvord also contracted with an independent forensics accountant, who conducted an audit of Petersonís bookkeeping. Peterson admitted to embezzling approximately $50,000 funds starting in about 2003 until her resignation from AUSD in August 2006.
Peterson paid Alvord School District back the $50,000 days after resigning. School district officials submitted their investigation to the Police Department to prepare criminal case materials for submission to the Riverside County District Attorney.
Peterson was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
