Detectives investigate suspicious incident

Riverside, Ca- Riverside Police Detectives are investigating a suspicious incident originally reported as a potential carjacking / kidnapping.

A 56-year-old Moreno Valley man is being questioned in relation to the series of events that began about 5:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Mission Inn Avenue and Market Street in downtown Riverside.

The man was driving a PT Cruiser sedan that he abandoned in the midst of traffic at the corner of Fifth and Market. He later said he'd run out of gas.

About this time a female driver phoned police saying a man had tried to force himself into her vehicle at the corner of Mission Inn and Market.

Witnesses said the man ran into a nearby muffler shop, acting strangely, first asking for help, and then acting in a threatening manner.

The man was seen trying to get into more than one vehicle in traffic on Market Street. He was last seen getting into a large white construction-type truck with an emblem on the side, heading southbound on Market Street.

At about 9 p.m., the man's ex-wife reported that her ex-husband had just arrived at her residence in a mobile home park in the northeast portion of the city, dropped off by a man in a white truck, who then drove off. Police responded to the residence where the man was taken into custody without incident.

Circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. Police are actively seeking information from any witnesses, especially the driver of the white truck. Please contact Riverside Police Detective Rick Sanfilippo at (951) 353-7105.
