Officer wins VFW National Award

Officer Debora Foy requested ceremony in hometown Riverside

Riverside, Ca- Riverside Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Debora Foy has been selected to receive the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ National Law Enforcement Officer Gold Medal for 2005-06. She was previously awarded VFW’s Department of California Law Enforcement Officer Award for 2005-06. When given the opportunity to receive the National Gold Medal anywhere in the United States, VFW officials said, Officer Foy asked that the recognition be in Riverside, at a City Council meeting, where her family, colleagues and community members she serves daily, could attend.

“She wanted it to be in her own hometown,” said Michael Pierson, chair of the California VFW Law Enforcement, Firefighter and EMT Committee. VFW presents the National Gold Medal each year to one recipient in each of these public service fields. “Members of the VFW can relate to police officers, firefighters and EMTs, having to put themselves in harm’s way while on the job,” Pierson said.

VFW State Commander John Wolfe, Past State Commander and National Representative John Fitzke, Pierson and local VFW Post and District officials will present Officer Foy with the National Gold Medal at the Riverside City Council meeting, Tuesday, July 25. The Council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

“Debbie Foy is an excellent officer and a wonderful person,” said Riverside Police Chief Russ Leach. “It’s an honor to see her service recognized in this way.”

Officer Debora Foy joined the Riverside Police Department in 1985. She has been recognized by the Department and by the community over the years for heroism, life saving, good judgment and exemplary service. Officer Foy is currently assigned to Field Operations in Riverside’s West Neighborhood Policing Area as School Resource Officer at La Sierra High School.
