Fatal Traffic Collision - Vehicle vs. Vehicle
Riverside, Ca- On Friday, July 21, 2006
at 8:40 pm a 1995 Chevrolet pick up driven by 18-year-old Miguel Angel Fernandez Diaz was headed
north on Van Buren Blvd. approaching California Ave. in the #1 lane of traffic when he swerved into
opposing traffic.
A 1993 Toyota mini-truck, driven by a 27-year-old male, with a 23-year-old female passenger, was
southbound on Van Buren Blvd. He was unable to avoid colliding head on with the Chevy Pick up.
All involved parties were Riverside residents.
Miguel Fernandez Diaz was ejected from his truck when the vehicle rolled several times and the
occupants of the Toyota were pinned inside their truck.
Riverside Police and Fire were called to the scene by a witness and the Fire Department was able
to free the 27-year-old male who was trapped inside the Toyota. His wife was pronounced deceased
at the scene from major trauma injuries. The man was taken to Riverside Community Hospital by
Paramedics and treated by the Emergency Room staff for a fractured right leg and other minor trauma
injuries.
The 18-year-old man driving the Chevy truck was suffering from head and body trauma. He was also
taken to Riverside Community Hospital and was found to be intoxicated. His condition is serious.
Criminal charges are pending his release from the hospital.
The Riverside Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene and the
collision is under investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective
