Officer assaulted, patrol car damaged during bar disturbance
Riverside, Ca- On December 8, 2006, at approximately 1:39 am, the Riverside Police Department Dispatch Center received an emergency call from a patron at the Tremors Sports Bar, which is located at 1329 University Ave. The patron reported that there was a fight occurring at the barís parking lot involving numerous people.
Police officers quickly arrived and encountered a very large crowd of agitated patrons in the parking lot of the bar. There were multiple fights occurring at various areas within the parking lot when officers arrived and began dispersing the crowd. Numerous officers from Riverside Police as well as UCR Police responded to the incident, which required committing a large portion of available officers to the incident by both agencies.
During the incident, a patron who had been detained by Tremors Bar security for assaulting a member of their staff was turned over to police. When police attempted to detain him, he became enraged and spat on a police officer then vandalized the officerís patrol car by deliberately smashing the windshield with his head. He was arrested for assaulting a police officer and vandalism. He has been identified as 22-year-old, Matthew Thomas Verwiel of Riverside.
Also during the incident, police discovered a male patron among the crowd lying on the ground who was suffering from injuries to his head, which he apparently sustained during a fight with another bar patron. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to an area hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. With the assistance of witnesses, police were able to quickly identify and arrest the suspect in that assault. He has been identified as 20-year-old, Keyron Keneth Sykes of Perris.
