Riverside, Ca- On August 26, 2005 shortly before 9:30 P. M., Riverside Police Dispatch center received several calls regarding a gunshot victim lying in the street on Penny Avenue near Rutland Avenue. Officers arrived and found an adult male who had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Witnesses reported seeing a white compact car driving back and forth past the victim and his friends. Words were exchanged between the pedestrians and the occupants of the car. One of the occupants got out of the car with a gun and began shooting at the pedestrians. The victim was struck at least once and died shortly after arrival at the hospital. He was identified as Mike Swayne, of Riverside.

Riverside Police have arrested three people as a result of this investigation. Two have been charged in connection with the homicide and one was arrested for unrelated charges. Detectives arrested Arnaldo Mercado, 19, of Riverside for murder and attempted murder. Mercado is believed to be the driver of the suspect vehicle involved in the shooting. Christian Garcia, 20, of Riverside was arrested for narcotics and weapons violations as he left a residence Detectives had under surveillance while investigating the murder. A Hispanic male , 17, of Imperial Valley was arrested and is in custody on charges of murder and attempted murder. The fourth occupant of the suspect vehicle was questioned and released.
