Riverside, Ca- A Moreno Valley man was shot by an
off-duty San Bernardino Police Officer during a roadside confrontation. Both men
were riding in vehicles traveling South on Alessandro Boulevard near Canyon
Crest Drive. Nicholas Allen Smith, 21 of Moreno Valley became angry with the
off-duty officer and threw an object at his car. Smith was in the front
passenger seat at the time. The officer pulled to the side of the road, followed
by the other vehicle. Smith got out and began smashing the windows of the
officer’s personal car while shouting obscenities and threatening to kill him.
Fearing for his life and while still seated in his car, the off-duty officer
drew his handgun from a concealed holster and fired at Smith, striking him once.
Smith sustained a non-life-threatening, perforating gunshot wound to his left
abdomen. He was taken by ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital where he was
treated and released before being booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center.
The other occupants of the car were questioned by detectives and released. The
officer suffered glass cuts to his face and arms.
