Riverside, Ca- On Saturday, December 17, 2005, the
Riverside Police Department in cooperation with the California Office of Traffic
Safety (OTS) will conduct a Checkpoint for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and
for vehicles illegally equipped for street racing. The checkpoint will be set up
on the University Avenue corridor between the hours of 8:00 PM and 3:00 AM.
Three OTS grants fund this event. These grants are The City of Riverside RIDE
grant, The City of Riverside Street Racing grant and the County of Riverside
Avoid The 30 grant.
Officers form the Riverside Police Department, Moreno Valley Police Department,
Corona Police Department, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, and the
University of California at Riverside Police Department will be participating in
this event.
The City of Riverside has experienced eight DUI-related traffic fatalities in
2005. The aim of the checkpoint is the removal of the impaired driver from the
roadway. Officers from all of these agencies encourage everyone to use a
designated driver and not drink and drive.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of
Traffic Safety, through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
