Riverside, Ca- On December 12, 2005, at 5:19pm, a
48-year-old white male from Riverside was walking north across 3rd street
between Franklin and Eucalyptus. He apparently stopped at the double yellow
lines in the middle of the street and jumped backward into the #1 lane of
eastbound 3rd Street. A 49-year-old Riverside woman, driving a 1989 Chevrolet
Baretta east on 3rd Street, was unable to avoid the man and he was struck by the
left front bumper of the car, which sent him over the hood and into the
windshield. The impact threw the pedestrian into the #1 lane of opposing
traffic, onto the roadway.
A 53-year-old San Bernardino man was driving his 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis in
the #1 lane of westbound 3rd street at this time and was unable to swerve far
enough to avoid running over the pedestrian, who was now trapped under the Grand
Marquis.
Involved parties called 911 and Riverside Fire and Police arrived at the scene.
Fire personnel were able to pull the man from under the vehicle and he was taken
by ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital with major head and body trauma
injuries. The Emergency Room staff pronounced him deceased as a result of his
injuries.
Members of the Riverside Police Department’s (M.A.I.T.) Major Accident
Investigation Team responded and the collision is under investigation.
