Riverside, Ca- At approximately 2:32am,
officers of the Riverside Police Department responded to the 91/60/215
interchange in regard to a male subject in a vehicle who appeared to have been
shot. Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle and subject who was
subsequently transported by ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital. There
were witnesses to the shooting who contacted officers at the scene.
The witnesses said they were following the suspect and victim vehicles on the
Westbound 60 Freeway when someone in the suspect vehicle began shooting at the
victim. Both vehicles drove onto the transition connector to the Northbound 215
Freeway. The victim vehicle drifted off the transition road and came to a stop
along the guardrail bordering the transition road from the Eastbound 91 to the
Westbound 60. The driver sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was
transported to a local hospital where he remains in very serious condition. He
is identified as Ricky Smith of San Bernardino. Mr. Smith is 32 years old. There
were several bullet holes in the driver’s door of his 2001 GMC Denali.
The suspect vehicle was a newer model Chevrolet Monte Carlo, brown, burgundy or
dark red in color. The license plate begins with the number “4” and ends with
the number “9.” There were several occupants in the vehicle but the witnesses
were not close enough to provide any more details to describe them. A witness
followed the suspect vehicle for approximately one mile until they left the
freeway and the witness returned to the scene and contacted officers.
Both affected transition connector roads were closed for several hours while
Riverside Police conducted their investigation. Anyone with information
regarding this shooting is requested to call Detective Ron Sanfilippo at
951-320-8051 or Detective Rick Cobb at 951-320-8034.
