Riverside, Ca- On April 13, 2003, at 1740
hours, officers of the Riverside Police Department responded to a major injury
traffic collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle at the intersection of La
Sierra Ave. and Campbell Ave. According to witnesses, a twelve-year-old boy was
crossing the street in a westerly direction just north of the intersection
outside of the crosswalk. A northbound driver in the #1 lane stopped to allow
the boy to cross. As the boy continued to cross the street, he was struck by a
1997 Saturn traveling northbound in the #2 lane.
The boy received major injuries and he was air lifted to Loma Linda Hospital by
Life-Flight helicopter.
The driver of the Saturn, Lynene Voelker, 44, of Riverside, failed to stop at
the scene. A witness followed her as she continued driving northbound on La
Sierra. The witness used a cell phone to report the driver’s location. Officers
stopped Ms. Voelker several miles from the collision scene. Ms. Voelker was
arrested and booked into Riverside County jail for Hit and Run and Driving Under
the Influence.
The collision is still under investigation. Members of the Department’s Major
Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded.
