Riverside, Ca- On May 20, 2002, at 0211hours, officers from the Riverside Police Department responded to the 4000 block of Pierce reference a possible burglary in progress. While investigating this incident, a white pick–up truck narrowly missed an officer as it left the area at a high rate of speed. At 0236 hours the department received a call in the 4100 block of Yukon Way reference a report of a white pick-up truck, with two subjects inside, pulling into a residential driveway at a high rate of speed. Officers responded to the location. As officers approached the truck it drove off at a high rate of speed, narrowly missing another officer. As other officers arrived on scene the truck accelerated and rammed an occupied, marked police car in an attempt to escape. The truck also hit a private vehicle that was parked at the curb. The suspects then fled on foot with officers in pursuit. During the foot chase an officer fired one shot at one of the suspects, hitting him in the right side of the abdomen. The suspect, Richard Whittington of Riverside, 30 years of age was transported to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of injuries and later transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center for follow-up treatment.
The second suspect, Jarrod Weymar of Fallbrook, 31 years of age was captured a short distance away. During investigation of the incident it was discovered that the truck had been reported stolen out of Riverside on May 19, 2002.
The suspects will be charged with Attempted Murder on a Police Officer, Felony Evading, Attempted Burglary and Grand Theft Auto.
Officer Chris Gaspard, who has been with the Riverside Police Department for three years, has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
