Freeway Chase – Officer Involved Shooting

Riverside, Ca-  On January 18, 2002 @ 0310 hours, units from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office were involved in a vehicle pursuit in the City of Riverside. The initial pursuit was for Vehicle Code violations, of a car later confirmed as stolen from Fontana. SBSO requested assistance from the Riverside Police Department when the pursuit was in the area of Van Buren Boulevard and Arlington Avenue. As the pursuit continued within the city limits, SBSO requested that RPD take over the pursuit. RPD took over the pursuit in the area of California Avenue and Harrison Street. The chase continued to the area of the Galleria at Tyler, when the suspect vehicle was seen traveling southbound Tyler in the northbound lanes.

The suspect vehicle entered the westbound 91 Freeway. Once the vehicle was on the 91-freeway assistance from the California Highway Patrol was requested. The suspect exited the 91 Freeway at McKinley in the City of Corona. The pursuing officers briefly lost sight of the suspect vehicle. The suspect was seen entering the 91-freeway traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. Both RPD and CHP units monitored the suspect vehicles travel from the eastbound lanes of the freeway. CHP used spike strips in an attempt to stop the vehicle as it continued to drive on the wrong side of the freeway. The suspect vehicle was involved in a minor traffic accident in the area of Tyler, with a vehicle that was traveling westbound 91, in the westbound lanes.

CHP set up a roadblock on the 91 freeway just east of the Adams on-ramp. The vehicle approached the roadblock and rammed into the marked CHP police vehicles. An officer from the Riverside Police Department fired (4) shotgun rounds at the suspect vehicle.

The suspect was struck in his upper body and taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening at this time.

The identity of the suspect has not been confirmed pending further investigation.
