Riverside, Ca- On Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at approximately 11:06 P.M., officers from the Riverside Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Penny & Lake. Prior to their arrival a 911 call was received in the Dispatch Center from a phone booth at Tyler & Wells. The caller indicated that he had driven his vehicle to the strip mall at 4773 Tyler and that his passenger had been shot. Officers responded and found a male Hispanic in the bed of a pick-up truck in the parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. Medical personnel responded and transported the victim to Riverside Community Hospital.
Investigators were called to the scene and determined the shooting occurred on Penny near Lake after a verbal confrontation between the two subjects in the truck and a group of Hispanic males walking in the area. The victim, identified as Luis E. Ramirez, Hispanic male, 21 years old of Riverside, was undergoing surgery at the hospital.
