Crossing guards assist elementary school students going to and coming from schools in both the Riverside Unified School District and Alvord School District within the city. Guards are hired, trained and supervised by Crossing Guard Program Coordinators, who also coordinate scheduling and posting of crossing guards at locations determined by the respective school districts throughout the city. To enhance the crossing guard program, the city also contracts with an agency to provide temporary crossing guard assistance.
Crossing Guards must meet specific qualifications to be hired.
- Must possess a valid Class "C" California Driver’s License;
- Reliable means of transportation; and
- Knowledge of traffic regulations as applied to school crossings.
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications may be asked to complete a written, performance and/or structured interview. In addition they need a good working knowledge of major streets in the city and map reading skills. Important qualities Crossing Guards exhibit include the ability to build a partnership between city government, parents, school administrators, PTA, community, and vehicle drivers.
These dedicated workers endure all forms of weather from extreme heat to inclement weather to help keep Riverside’s children safe. They work four hours on week days while school is in session from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Occasionally, the guards have the opportunity to work extra hours in traffic control at community functions such as parades and festivals.
The city recruits for potential Crossing Guards on an as needed basis or to maintain a pool of substitute crossing guards. If you know of any interested persons please encourage them to apply and join our team.
