SPEED HUMPS

Speed humps are one of the most requested traffic calming improvements for residential streets. They are designed to warn drivers to slow down and are effective in reducing driving speeds. They are not the same as the speed bumps you encounter in parking lots, those have a higher profile and are designed for traffic that is already going less than 25 mph.

Speed Humps are a gradual hump with a height of 3 inches and length of 14 feet. When they are installed they come with advance signs warning of approach to the speed hump and warning pavement markings.

  • A resident contacts us with their traffic concerns, requesting speed humps. After the request is made, the Traffic Engineering Division determines whether the street meets the basic guidelines for speed humps. The street should be a local residential street and not have a grade of more than 8%.

  • We send the resident a speed hump packet of information along with a petition form. On the petition, the property owners agree to be responsible for 25% ($350 per hump) of the cost of installing the speed humps. The resident in charge of the petition gathers at least 70% of the property owners signatures and submits the petition to us.

  • We verify that the 70% property owners signature requirement is met. Then we conduct studies to determine the volume of traffic and the speed of the traffic. Streets eligible for speed humps should have at least 500 vehicles per day and 30% must be going 6 mph over the speed limit. Street conditions regarding use, width, length, grade, and curvature of the street are also evaluated for speed hump eligibility.

  • Street eligibility is determined and the petition is submitted to the Parking Traffic and Streets Commission for review, public discussion and approval.

  • The residents 25% contribution for speed hump construction is submitted.

  • Recommendation for speed hump installation is scheduled for the next City Council meeting for approval of construction.

  • Speed humps and speed hump signs are installed by City crews.
