Neighborhood Councils
In May of 2010 the Mayor and City Council endorsed the formation of Neighborhood Councils in each of the 26 community neighborhoods within the City’s General Plan. The goal of creating neighborhood councils is to create and improve two-way communication between City Hall and neighborhoods and provide an even greater opportunity for citizens to participate in the civic process.
What is a Neighborhood Council?
A certified Neighborhood Council is a citizen-led neighborhood advisory group, endorsed by the City through an application process. The Neighborhood Council boundaries are generally consistent with the 26 community neighborhoods in the City’s General Plan. The official function of the neighborhood council is to:
- Facilitate open communication and act as the primary means of information exchange between City Hall and the neighborhood
- Review and recommend an action, policy, or plan to their city council representative(s) on issues of importance that directly impact their neighborhood
- Serve as an information resource to neighborhood associations within the neighborhood council boundaries
- Support and promote citizen participation and neighborhood enhancement.
