DRESSER     (Picture...)

The oak dresser is in the Eastlake style and was originally purchased in 1887 in Reading, Pennsylvania.

This photograph of Catharine Bettner was taken at the Taber photographic studio in San Francisco. She is wearing a typical day dress of about 1885, in a dark-colored silk.

WICKER SEWING BASKET      ( Picture...)  

The wicker sewing basket, on stand, was manufactured circa 1890 in Germany.

ON THE FIREPLACE MANTLE     (no picture)

Displayed in silver filigreed frames are photographs of Mrs. Bettner's late daughter, Catharine, and husband, James.

The walnut Seth Thomas clock is from 1878. It belonged to Mrs. Bettner, this house's original owner.

COMBINATION DESK WARDROBE     (Picture...)

The combination oak desk/wardrobe is from the 1880s and was originally from another Riverside home of that period. The rush-seated golden oak chair is original to this house.

CHEST OF DRAWERS     (Picture...)

This French chest of has locking drawers for the storage of valuables. The decorative pulls are ormolu, brass made to look like gold. The little porcelain bosses depict eighteenth century figures in Louis XV dress.

JEWELRY CASKET ON TOP OF CHEST OF DRAWERS   (Picture...)   (Special Viewer...)

This silver-plated jewelry casket is original to this house and opens at the touch of the bird's tail. "Casket" means chest, and refers to the cylindrical storage compartment which is lined with red satin.

SILVER POLO TROPHY     (no picture)

The silver polo trophy recalls the country club sports at which the Bettner men and boys excelled, polo among them. The pampas grass fronds are from the house's gardens and were locally popular at the time that this house was built.

OAK BED FRAME AND BEDSIDE TABLE     (Picture...)

The oak bed-frame is from the 1880s and is part of a set, including this room's desk/wardrobe. It was originally in another Riverside home of the period.

The walnut bedside table is from the 1870s. On top of the table, in a silver filigree frame, is a photograph of Mrs. Bettner's late son, Louis.

MATCHING CHAIRS ON EITHER SIDE OF MIRROR     (no picture)

The matching chairs on either side of the built-in mirror belonged to Mrs. Bettner and are original to this house. The wood is cherry and the seats are caned.
