:: Riverside Library Service School
Historical Background
The Riverside Library Service School began in 1912 under the direction of the city librarian, Joseph Daniels. The School, which began as a five year experiment, would remain open until 1943, when it was "suspended" due to World War II. Unfortunately, the four year women's college that Daniels had envisioned never materialized. Though the school received accreditation from the California Board of Education, it was never able to receive accreditation from the American Library Association. This hurt the School immensely, and further ensured that it would not receive Carnegie grants. Even so, the School graduated over one thousand students, many of whom went on to successful library careers.

Scope and Content
Five series comprise the collection.
Series I (School Administration) has twelve sub-series: correspondence; press releases; minutes; reports; biographical materials on the two directors; essays and articles; newspaper clippings; library visitations; employment applications; fraudulent student applications; illustrations; and forms.
Series II (Course Files) has eight sub-series: winter session; summer session; long course; course outlines; cataloging year course; bulletins; class schedules; and course synopses.
Series III (Teacher Records) contains three sub-series: correspondence; instructors' reports on students; and instructions to students.
Series IV (Student Records) contains eight sub-series: rosters of students and applicants; student records; card file; student grade reports; student theses; student projects; student loan records; and graduate questionnaires.
Series V (Microfilm) has four folders of material.
Series VI (Miscellaneous) consists of four sub-series: receipts, correspondence, invitations, and miscellaneous materials.
Some materials in the collection are original items, while others were photocopied in a prior processing effort. Item counts do not reflect the actual number of pages. Some pages are also missing from items such as page twelve from the 12 July 1910 report in Series I.D.1.
Further processing may be required in the future to remove staples. Also, the newspaper clippings should be photocopied at a later date, and torn documents repaired. Item counts for folders in Series IV.A also need to be determined as well as the addition of alternative names to the archival description to assist researchers.

Wheelock, president of the Public Library Board. In addition to letters, the folders also contain telegrams and memorandums. In Folder 10, a letter to Dr. C. C. Williamson of the Carnegie Corporation may be of interest to the researcher. It includes a questionnaire regarding library school statistics, which had been completed prior to the 1921 death of the school's director, Joseph Daniels.
