Homeless Action Plan

Riverside Community
Broad-based Homeless Action Plan
June 3, 2003

In early 2001, the City Council approved the formation of the City of Riverside Homeless Task Force Committee. The charge to the Task Force was to provide advice, guidance, and recommendations to the Mayor and City Council in order to achieve a greater level of effectiveness and programming to address the City's homeless situation. The Task Force consisted of leaders from government, community groups, homeless providers, as well as members from the faith-based community. In addition, the City provided a homeless program consultant to facilitate the efforts of the Task Force. The Task Force met monthly for two years to develop the plan.

On June 3, 2003, the Riverside City Council adopted the "Riverside Community Broad-Based Homeless Action Plan." Since its adoption, the City has aggressively pursued implementation of 30 action-based strategies within the plan including hiring a Homeless Services Coordinator and street outreach workers, opening a new Emergency Shelter, developing a homeless service Access Center, expanding funding for community-based service agencies, identifying new funding for homeless prevention strategies, strengthening collaboration with faith-based service providers and creating more affordable housing opportunities targeted to homeless populations.
