Jurupa Grade Separation

Project Status & News

  • Construction is under way and on schedule for completion in March 2009

Description

A railroad underpass will be built at the Jurupa Avenue/Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) crossing by lowering Jurupa Avenue and constructing a railroad bridge for train traffic. During construction of the railroad bridge, a temporary two lane detour road south of Jurupa Avenue will accommodate vehicular traffic.

To better facilitate the traffic flow in the area, the final project design includes the closure of Sheppard Street at Anita Place, realignment of Williams Street, the relocation of the entrance to Martha McLean Anza Narrows Park, and the permanent closure of the Mountain View Avenue/UPRR at-grade crossing.

Construction Schedule

Construction began in June 2007, and is expected to be complete by March 2009.

Project Benefits

  • Eliminates 1.8 hours per day of gate down time, per crossing, which stops traffic on Jurupa and Mountain View Avenues
  • Permanently closes the Mountain View Avenue at-grade railroad crossings

Project Facts

  • Jurupa and Mountain View Avenues carry a total of about 16,000 vehicles per day
  • Six passenger busses and 25 school buses traverse the Jurupa and Mountain View Avenues at-grade crossings each day
  • This segment of the Union Pacific line is used by 43 freight trains and 12 passenger trains daily
  • The rail traffic causes approximately 107 minutes per day, per crossing, of traffic delay on Jurupa and Mountain View Avenues
