Prevention

The Fire Prevention Bureau is located at 3900 Main St., on the 3rd floor of City Hall. The Bureau consists of the fire marshal, 1 plan check engineer, 6 fire inspectors, a hazardous materials clerk and an information specialist.

The Bureau currently enforces the 2013 California Fire, Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing and Residential Codes, as amended by the Riverside Municipal Code, in addition to National Fire Protection Association standards; Title 19, of the California Public Safety Code; and, the California Health and Safety Code.

In March 1993, the City of Riverside implemented an Automatic Fire Sprinkler Ordinance. All new construction, including single family homes, are required to install an automatic fire sprinkler system when the structure is being built.

Fire Inspection Program

The purpose of the City of Riverside's Fire Prevention Program is to prevent injuries, deaths, business interruption and property damages resulting from fires. In accordance with the California Fire Code and the Riverside Municipal Code, the Riverside Fire Department is required to inspect all Riverside businesses for fire safety. The frequency of the inspections depends on state laws, industry standards and general life safety hazards.

Fire Safety Inspections

If fire code violations are found, an inspector will issue a written inspection report and schedule a reinspection to confirm that the violations have been corrected. Most violations must be corrected within 10-15 days.
