Subject: SKY LANTERNS ARE ILLEGAL IN THE CITY OF RIVERSIDE
Full Text:

The City of Riverside Fire Department reminds all residents that it is illegal to use and operate Sky Lanterns.

Sky Lanterns, also known as Kongming Lanterns, contain a small candle or fuel cell. When lit, the flame heats the air inside the lantern, causing the lantern to rise into the air. They are known to travel significant distances from the point of release. The sky lantern is only airborne for as long as the flame stays lit, after which the lantern floats back to the ground.
These devices pose a serious fire and life-safety hazard, which include the potential to start an unintended fire on or off the property from which they are released.
Due to the extreme fire risk, the use of sky lanterns is prohibited in the City of Riverside. Person or Persons who are in possession of these devices can be charged with a misdemeanor crime, which may include a fine of up to $1800.00 per violation, per day.

Please enjoy your July 4th Holidays and remember to be Fire Safe.
