| The Fire Prevention Bureau is located at 3900 Main St., on the 3rd floor of City Hall. The bureau consists of the fire marshal, deputy fire marshal, 2 plan check engineers, 7 fire inspectors, a hazardous materials clerk and an information specialist.
The bureau currently enforces the 2007 California Fire, Building, Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes, as amended by the Riverside Municipal Code, in addition to National Fire Protection Association standards; Title 19, of the California Public Safety Code; and, the California Health and Safety Code.
In March 1993 the City of Riverside implemented an Automatic Fire Sprinkler Ordinance. All new construction, including single family homes, is required to install an automatic fire sprinkler system when the structure is being built.
In 2007 the Bureau with assistance from fire fighting personnel, conducted inspections, reviewed plans, and issued special event permits that when combined totaled nearly 20,000.
In addition, businesses that handle certain regulated chemicals are required to develop and implement a Risk Management Plan or a California Accidental Release Prevention program. The purpose or these programs is to prevent accidental releases of the chimicals in question.
Other programs the bureau implements include the hazardous materials Business Emergency Plan (BEP) and investigating environmental crimes in conjunction with the Riverside County District Attorney's Environmental Crimes Task Force.
