The United States Environmental Protection Agency has selected the independent Riverside, California based environmental testing firm, Babcock Laboratories, Inc. (dba E. S. Babcock & Sons), to provide analytical laboratory services in support of the new Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Program (UCMR3), says CEO/CFO Allison Mackenzie.
As a contractor to the USEPA, Babcock Labs will conduct UCMR3 water quality testing for up to 800 communities serving populations below 10,000 people.
“This is a prestigious undertaking and we consider it a great honor to be actively supporting the research and testing necessary to protect and improve our nation’s water quality,” said Mackenzie.
Earlier in 2012, Babcock Labs became one of the first laboratories in the country to be approved by the USEPA for all seven UCMR3 analytical chemistry methods. To date, fewer than eight laboratories nationwide are approved for the complete List 1 and List 2 water quality analyses.
UCMR3 marks the third time Babcock Laboratories has successfully completed the rigorous process necessary to be approved by the USEPA for water quality testing under the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Program.
“We are proud of our significant historical role in the region and equally pleased to play an important role in Riverside’s future,” said Mackenzie. “In keeping with the City of Riverside’s commitment to innovation, the award of this contract proves Babcock Laboratories’ dedication to innovative technologies and environmental protection. This contract is yet another illustration of our ability to be recognized at the national level as an environmental industry leader.”
The USEPA small systems contract engages Babcock Labs to conduct water quality testing for trace metals, chlorate, hexavalent chromium, 1,4-dioxane, volatile organics, perfluorinated compounds, and hormones. All water systems are set to begin the three-year monitoring program in January of 2012.
Founded in Riverside, California, in 1906, Babcock Laboratories, Inc. is the most experienced, privately held analytical laboratory in Southern California. Babcock Labs provides analytical testing of water, wastewater and hazardous waste to a wide variety of municipalities and industrial clients. Earlier in the history of the company it provided agricultural testing for the citrus industry, area farmers, and miners. As a cornerstone of local business, Babcock Labs was called upon to support water companies and districts when they were first formed.
